Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Financial Access for All

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Originally established as a week-long celebration in 1968, it was expanded to a full month in 1988 to better recognize the vibrant and diverse Hispanic communities across the United States.
At Metro Credit Union, we’re proud to serve some of the largest Hispanic populations in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We believe that banking should be accessible to everyone, and we work every day to ensure our financial products and services meet the needs of our community.
Massachusetts Hispanic Community by the Numbers
- Nearly 900,000 Hispanic and Latino residents call Massachusetts home, making up 12.6% of the state’s population, according to the most recent U.S. Census data.
- Cities like Lawrence (77%), Chelsea (66%), and Lynn (36%) have some of the highest concentrations of Hispanic residents in the state, and Metro is proud to have branch locations in each of these communities.
- In 2024, nearly 60,000 businesses in Massachusetts were Hispanic/Latino-owned—a 23% increase from 2022.
Metro is a Juntos Avanzamos Credit Union
Meaningful progress has been made in expanding financial access, with over 90% of Hispanic households having access to banking services in 2021, according to FDIC data. Additionally, three out of four Hispanic households were fully banked, with access to essential financial tools.
At the same time, there's a powerful opportunity to reach the 9.3% who remain unbanked and the 24.1% who are underbanked, who may still lack access to services like credit, savings products, or financial education. By continuing to invest in inclusive solutions, we can help ensure every household has the tools to build financial stability and thrive.
Metro Credit Union is a Juntos Avanzamos ("Together We Advance") designated credit union. This national designation recognizes credit unions that are committed to serving and empowering Hispanic and immigrant communities, offering tailored products and services.
As part of this network, Metro:
- Employs bilingual staff
- Accepts alternative forms of identification
- Translation tools in-branch
The Juntos Avanzamos network now includes 141 credit unions across 28 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.
