Metro Credit Union Named Credit Union Hero by Banking New England
Metro Credit Union, Massachusetts’ largest state-charted credit union, today announced that it has been named the overall winner in the Credit Union Hero category of the Community Hero Awards by Banking New England, a publication focused on covering the unique challenges faced by community banks and credit unions. Banking New England selected Metro for its work producing Still She Rises, an October 2019 event that raised more than $55,000 for domestic violence prevention.
Still She Rises honored Ersilia Cataldo Matarazzo, a beloved member of the community and 20-year employee of Metro Credit Union whose life was tragically cut short as a result of domestic violence. All proceeds benefited HarborCOV, Portal to Hope, and the Ersilia Cataldo Matarazzo Fund by Kiwanis. These organizations, based in Everett and Chelsea, provide comprehensive services to people whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence.
“Still She Rises was a very meaningful event for our organization and community,” said Robert Cashman, CEO and president. “It is a privilege to give back in Ersilia’s name and we are honored and grateful to be recognized for our efforts.”
Metro is committed to giving back to the community in many ways. In addition to the fight against domestic violence, Metro also supports local charities including Coalition for the Homeless, Inversant, and The Neighborhood Developers. So far in 2020, the organization has also joined efforts in the fight against COVID-19, donating 5,000 N-95 masks to Partners HealthCare in April, and $5,000 to the Chelsea Collaborative in May to help those hardest hit financially by the pandemic.
