Metro Holds Fundraiser for Partner Chelsea Collaborative’s Summer Youth Employment Initiative

Chelsea, Mass. – (July 21,2016) – Metro Credit Union, the Commonwealth’s largest state-chartered credit union, hosted a fundraiser on June 8th to benefit The Chelsea Collaborative’s Summer Youth Employment Initiative. As a business partner of The Chelsea Collaborative, Metro annually fundraises to further summer job opportunities for Chelsea youths.

The Summer Youth Employment Initiative (SYEI) partners with various businesses in the Chelsea community to employ Chelsea students each summer. Since the SYEI was founded in 2001, the program has employed over two thousand youths across thirty worksites. In addition to fundraising to support the program, Metro provides financial literacy courses to the working students, teaching them important money management skills. This year, Metro provided accounts for each of the students, encouraging them to pay themselves first by saving for their futures.

Charlene Bauer, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Business Development, and Community Relations, commented, “With an increase in youth violence it is critical to provide young people with the opportunity to work in a positive environment and feel good about what they are doing while earning money, developing financial skills and learning life-long lessons.”

This year, the program was able to employ over one third of the over six hundred applicants. Bauer added, “With help from benefactors, the program was able to offer jobs to a record number of students this summer. We are encouraged by the success of the program, and look forward to growing the initiative further in coming summers.”
