Metro Credit Union & The Homebuying Mentors to offer “Homebuying 101” course

Metro CU To Refund $50  Course Tuition Upon Successful Completion of Program

CHELSEA, Mass. (May 23, 2013) – Metro Credit Union, which is poised to become the  Commonwealth’s largest state-chartered credit union, today announced the opening  of enrollment in a “Homebuying 101” course it is sponsoring for first-time  homebuyers on the North Shore. Taught by The Homebuying Mentors, in partnership  with The North Shore Community Development Coalition, the four-session course  will be held in Peabody, Mass. on the following Tuesday and Thursday evenings:  June 4, 6, 11 and 13. All four class sessions run from 6:00-8:45 PM, and are  held at the Aviv Center, 240 Lynnfield Street in Peabody.   “The Homebuying  101 course was developed for individuals and families eager to purchase their  first home, but who are not quite sure where to start or how to proceed,” said  Tom Nadeau, Metro CU’s chief operating officer in charge of Lending. “We  understand how anxious homebuyers can become when faced with navigating the  complex process and making good choices, which is why we are so pleased to be  partnering with The Homebuying Mentors, an organization that has been  successfully preparing people for homeownership for 20 years.”   The class fee is  $50 per person ($75 for couples), and includes access to the four-session  course, course materials, unlimited access to coaching from mentors, and access  to free supplemental pre- and post-purchase classes. Those who complete the  course will be prepared to:

  • Assess readiness to buy a  home          
  • Learn how to qualify for a mortgage  and about loan products for first-time homebuyers        
  • Understand the responsibilities of  credit          
  • Meet high quality lenders,  attorneys, real estate agents, home inspectors, home insurance representatives,  and specialists in lead paint, asbestos, and mold removal, and energy  efficiency          
  • Understand the legal aspects of  buying a home including “The Offer” and the “Purchase and Sale  Agreement”          
  • Find out about financial assistance  available including first-time homebuyer mortgage products, down payment and  closing cost support and mortgage buy-down programs.
  • Enrollees must  attend all 4 sessions in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. About The  Homebuying Mentors The Homebuying  Mentors got its start at Allston Brighton CDC back in 1994 by holding its first  Homebuying 101 class for local neighborhood residents interested in buying their  first home in the Allston Brighton neighborhood. Over time, Allston Brighton CDC  grew its program to offer individual coaching and connect buyers with to high  quality real estate professionals.
