FUEL, Connect & Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Leaders Accept Support

CHELSEA, Mass. (February 6, 2013) – Metro Credit Union, which is poised to become the Commonwealth’s largest state-chartered credit union, presented checks to three community- based non-profit organizations yesterday at its headquarters at 200 Revere Beach Parkway in Chelsea, Mass. Robert Cashman, president of Metro CU made the presentations to each group’s leaders as well as other members of each organization.

The checks presented are part of Metro CU’s ongoing commitment to supporting organizations that make the community a better place to live and work. This group of recipient organizations was:

Families United in Education Leadership (FUEL)
Metro CU has enjoyed an ongoing relationship with Families United in Educational Leadership, also known as FUEL.  Over the past few years the relationship has expanded, with Metro CU donations now totaling $25,000.

FUEL accounts at Metro CU offer a matching scholarship to families who save monthly for their children’s education. Matching funds are donated by Metro Credit Union and other programs in the city of Chelsea. The matching funds allow families to double the amount that they have saved, up to $1,500.

Accepting the check on behalf of Chelsea Public Schools were School Superintendent Mary
Bourque and Gerry McCue, director of finance, Chelsea Public Schools.

In July of 2012 Metro Credit Union announced its participation with community organizations to launch CONNECT, based out of Chelsea. To support the launch and development of the organization, Metro CU committed $10,000 over the first few years. The mission of CONNECT is to integrate services that will help Chelsea residents set goals, and manage and grow their personal income and assets. One important goal is to provide the “unbanked” or “under- banked” with their own bank accounts in order to reduce dependence on costly check cashing services and payday lenders.

Accepting the check on behalf of CONNECT’s parent organization The Neighborhood Developers were Ann Houston, executive director, and Marissa Guananja, director of CONNECT/Resident Asset Development.

Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home
Metro Credit Union will present a check for $5,000 as the final installment of a 5 year commitment totaling $25,000 to the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home.  The Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home provides exceptional nursing and residential care to persons who are too frail or debilitated to live at home. Metro CU’s funds represented a multi-year commitment to support the growth of the skilled care facilities located on Admiral’s Hill in Chelsea.

Accepting the check on behalf of the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home was Barry Berman, the home’s chief executive officer.
