Metro Credit Union Sponsors FUEL Scholarships

Credit Union partners with local philanthropic organizations

Chelsea, MA – January 18, 2010 – Robert M. Cashman, President and CEO is pleased to announce that Metro has partnered with Families United in Educational Leadership (FUEL) and the Chelsea Education Foundation to sponsor a college savings program for residents of Chelsea, Massachusetts.

FUEL Accounts offer a matching scholarship to families who save monthly for their children’s education. Participation in the program is voluntary, and requires student participation in an afterschool program. Families participate in a savings circle that meets monthly to discuss the program, provide support to families to achieve their savings goal, and learn more about financial management.

Matching funds are donated by Metro Credit Union as well as other youth programs in the city of Chelsea. The matching funds will allow families to double the amount that they have saved, up to $1,500.  FUEL matches the savings with the goal of creating a $3,000 college fund for each student by the time they graduate high school.

“Metro is proud to support this wonderful initiative that encourages the goal of secondary education.  The role that families play in student achievement is vital, and we are committed to programs such as this that involve the entire family in saving for education,” said Robert M. Cashman, President and CEO of Metro.
